Local Waters in the Borders
Tweed Guide guests fish on both private and public water.Below we supply details for public waters where our guides have regular local knowledge. Most of this fishing is accessible through permits organised by the Angling Associations of each Borders town. These associations have made fishing available to generations of ordinary working people in a partnership with local riparian owners. The associations operate in a fiercely protected democratic tradition and are part of the “ Scottish “ way of organising fishing which often excludes Sunday angling . This means that details will rightly be amended by committee decision. Tweed Guide will try to keep information accurate but accepts no responsibility for changes to details on this page.

" Beautiful waters, quaint countryside and delightful townspeople"
As Tweed Guide fishes a stretch details will be added. It would take a lifetime to fish every beat on the Borders waters. It sounds like a good idea to us.
Surveys show that Borders anglers fish on a near weekly basis and mostly on the same stretch. Personally for pleasure we fish more and more on the same beats until we begin to really know the water. Most but not all associations charge locals and visitors alike.
Earlston Season £8 Day £2. ( 6 miles)The Leader is a relatively narrow tributary of the Tweed with its own unique charm. Deep pots feature some quality grayling. Stretches near the road ( A68) are also productive but in our opinion the rougher wooded stretches present a bit of a scramble and a real escape to unspoilt waters. Tickets at Hotels, grocers and newsagents in Earlston. Contact for information Andrew Foggin 01896 848183
Galashiels Season £25 Day £9. An extensive stretch of water ( 12 miles) with enough to satisfy every type and level of angler. Quality grayling exist but are not so avidly hunted as in most other Borders waters. A good stock of wild brown trout although long term anglers complain that numbers are dwindling. Some popular spots are very heavily fished but many others remain seldom visited. Specimen brownies of 4lb + turn up most years usually to evening or specialist anglers and of course to salmon spinners.Tickets at J&A Turnbull, Bank St Galashiels ( traditional fishing shop with excellent service). Secretary S Grzybowski 01896 75512
Kelso Season £20 (£25 visitors) Week £10 Day £5. The Tweed becomes a mighty river as the Teviot enters at the world famous Junction Pool. Fine fishing for trout and grayling with variation on the smaller and attractive Teviot stretch. Wading can test the faint hearted in even a slight flood but well worth the effort. Tickets at Intersport and Tweedside Tackle in the Square Kelso.
Melrose Season £12 Day £4. A lovely stretch of water with easy access to the town and local facilities including excellent pubs. Good grayling water and some first class dry fly fishing. Escaped rainbows are throughout the Tweed but for some reason we seem to catch specimens at Melrose most trips. As a popular tourist location expect walkers to want to chat. Like much of the mid to lower Tweed,in salmon season may get a little crowded for the trout/grayling angler.Tickets at the Spar in the main street. Secretary Tom McLeish 01896 822232
St Boswells Season £15 ( £18 visitor) Day ( Grayling £7, Trout £6). Excellent fishing for both trout and grayling. A wide variety of varying wading, some easy some very difficult. A system of additional .50p tickets is used to keep maximum numbers on some popular stretches. Tickets at the newsagents and the Borders Gun Room ( constantly developing fishing section well worth a visit) both St Boswells
Selkirk Season £15 Day £5. A large tract of water on the Ettrick and Yarrow tributaries. The lack of anglers on all but the town stretch means peaceful angling. Yarrow has the reputation for the best quality fish. A few grayling turn up but are seldom fished for. In late summer the town water can get a little crowded. Tickets at Rogerson Newsagent in the square Selkirk. Secretary David Mitchell 01750 20748
